Modern Japanese Hut Seamlessly Blends With Nature

Tokyo-based Naoi Architecture & Design Office created the Hut in Tsujido to seamlessly integrate this family residence with its natural surroundings. “The clients hoped to incorporate the feel of nature in their daily lives, whether they’re enjoying gardening or having meals outside,” the architects said.

The ground floor has an open plan with three zones: kitchen and dining, living and utility areas. The areas flow together but are separated by concrete sections — creating distinct spaces for each functional space. The second floor houses two bedrooms and a balcony, which has more privacy yet plenty of natural light.

The architects employed elements inspired by traditional Japanese huts, including an open floor plan on the ground floor and a pitched roof. The exposed steel roof truss opens up the space and lends an industrial yet sophisticated touch.

The home was built on an uneven plot with the kitchen and dining area sunk into the ground. The difference in height allows light to flood the home and creates a natural eye-level path to the garden scenery outside. [Photography by Hiroshi Ueda]
