Hilltop Home Mirrors Quebec’s Spruce Forests

La Cache’s location north of Montreal, on a rocky cap within a dense forest, intertwines with the look and feel of the home. Nathalie Thibodeau Architecte’s design for this hilltop home plays with long vertical lines, and uses both large windows and a covered patio to immerse residents in the serene space.
Coming up to the house from its winding trail, the tall and dark vertical planks that wrap around the exterior seem to fade into the wooded background. This side of the home has very few windows.

The interior of the space continues to emphasize the verticality of the location. White walls pull your attention to contrasting long black lines that frame windows along the back of the home. The architect describes these as a “tableaux, so the monumentality of the setting can be appreciated.” A large, covered patio connected to the kitchen provides an additional space to enjoy the outdoors and a perfect setting for summer dinners.
