Australian Home’s Contemporary Interiors, Outdoor Spaces Defy Art Deco Facade

In this renovation of an Art Deco home in the Melbourne suburb of Caulfield, Christopher Megowan Architects reordered the interiors of the house to create a new backbone. The Kumquat Tree House was so named for its view of the fruit tree in the backyard.
Two outdoor “rooms” were added to the home. The deck to the east has the ability to turn into an outdoor cinema thanks to the double-sided projector screen in the window of the home theater. To the west, a larger deck features a double-sided fireplace.

A large concrete island separates the kitchen and the living areas. Orange-hued timber ties together the original terracotta and brick accents both inside and out. The rear of the home features sheet-metal cladding.
The design combines old and new, allowing the renovated spaces to fit in with the original home and adding a contemporary vibe. Photos and information provided by Christopher Megowan Architects
